What’s in a toiler bowl cleaner?

Almost all bathroom cleaning product contain harsh chemicals including bleach, so it is not very recommendable for you to use them, especially if you have kids. Once the chlorine from the bleach is combined with acid, a poisonous gas is produced. This gas is like the one that people used to use back in the World Wars. Most people know that bleach is a corrosive and dangerous irritant that can easily burn your skin and other surfaces and materials that come into contact with it.

The bathroom cleaning products also contain ten to fifty percent of hydrochloric acid, an acid related to kidney damage and irritation of the respiratory tract. There are products that contain fragrances that can also be hazardous when inhaled and lead to allergic reactions, airway inflammations, and headaches. Some chemicals and substances in the bathroom cleaners can even lead to hormone disruptions.

Bearing in mind all the hazards of the bathroom cleaning products, we recommend that you try these homemade natural toiler bowl cleaners. This is how you can prepare them:

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of cornstarch
  • ½ cup of citric acid
  • 25 drops of an essential oil
  • ½ cup of baking soda
  • a mold of your choice (for instance, a muffin tin)
  • gallon-sized zip-top bag
  • big Ziploc bag
  • water in a spray bottle

Preparation

Put all ingredients in the Ziploc baggie, with the exception of the essential oil. Close the bag and shake. Next thing you should do is to open the bag and add two to three streams of water, then close it back again and knead. In case it becomes puffy, let a little air in – this happens as a result of the reaction of baking soda and the citric acid. Make sure that the mixture feels like pie dough – once you squeeze a handful and it remains like that, it is ready. Just make sure you do not over-water it.

Finally, add the essential oil of your choice into the bag and shake again. Watchfully pack the mixture into the molds, and then let it dry for two days. Once they are dry, get the pieces out of the molds and let them dry for another day or two. In the end, place them in a sealed container and they are good to go.

These cleaning bombs are very easy to use – just drop one of them in the toilet bowl and let it work until it stops fizzing. Next, clean the sides using a brush, and flush. This is all you needed to do – now you have your own DIY homemade toilet cleaning bombs that are completely natural, thus safe both for the environment and people.
