Zero Waste Bathroom: Where to Start

Gudrun Howell · August 1, 2026 ·

Adopting a zero-waste bathroom may seem complicated at first. Between the well-established habits and the multitude of products used on a daily basis, it is normal not to know where to start. Yet, every little bit counts. By gradually changing your routine, you can significantly reduce your waste while taking care of your skin and well-being.

In this article, you’ll discover simple, concrete and accessible tips to transform your bathroom into a more eco-friendly space, without sacrificing your comfort.

Sorting through and understanding your habits

Before changing your products, start by looking at your bathroom. What products do you really use? Which ones are forgotten at the bottom of a drawer?

Identify your essentials

Take the time to list your essentials: shower gel, shampoo, make-up remover, moisturizer… This step allows you to better understand your consumption and avoid unnecessary purchases.

Complete your existing products

Zero waste is not about throwing everything away and starting from scratch. On the contrary, use your products to the end. It is both an ecological and economic approach.

Identify recurring waste

Note the packaging you throw away most often: plastic bottles, cotton pads, disposable razors, etc. These are the elements that you can replace as a priority.

By becoming aware of your habits, you lay the foundations for a sustainable transition.

Gradually replacing with sustainable alternatives

Once your diagnosis has been made, you can start replacing certain products with zero-waste alternatives. The objective is to take it step by step, without pressure.

Opt for solid products

Solid cosmetics are an excellent gateway to zero waste. Shampoo, soap, deodorant or toothpaste exist today in solid form. They last longer and do not require plastic packaging.

Adopt reusable accessories

Some everyday objects can be easily replaced:

  • Make-up remover pads become washable
  • Exfoliating pads are available in a reusable version
  • Disposable razors can be replaced with safety models

These alternatives are easy to incorporate into your routine and help reduce your waste from the first few weeks.

Choose refillable containers

If you prefer liquid products, choose brands that offer refills or returnable bottles. This limits the build-up of plastic.

Simplify your routine

A zero-waste bathroom also requires a more minimalist routine. There is no need to multiply the products. A mild soap can replace both shower gel and facial cleanser, for example.

Establish sustainable habits on a daily basis

The most important thing in a zero waste approach is regularity. Once your products are replaced, it’s all about adopting new habits in the long term.

Learn to read labels

Choose natural compositions and biodegradable ingredients. You are doing something for your skin and for the environment.

Buy in bulk when possible

Some shops now offer beauty products in bulk. You can fill your containers and avoid unnecessary packaging.

Maintain your accessories

Reusable objects require minimal maintenance. Wash your make-up remover pads or wipes regularly to ensure good hygiene.

Embrace a gradual transition

Don’t strive for perfection. It’s okay to move at your own pace. Every change, no matter how small, has a positive impact.

In conclusion, switching to a zero-waste bathroom is above all a personal and evolving process. By starting by observing your habits and then gradually replacing your products, you can transform your routine without constraint.

You’ll quickly discover that there’s more to this transition than just reducing your waste. It also allows you to consume more consciously, to simplify your daily life and to take care of yourself in a different way.

Remember: the most important thing is to get started. Even a small gesture today can make a big difference tomorrow.
