Why do you need to put vinegar in the fridge?

Gudrun Howell · December 21, 2023 ·

Bad smells in the fridge are a common problem, often due to forgetting food that goes bad, leaving a lingering smell. Fortunately, there are simple solutions to fix this.

Causes of Bad Odors and Solutions

Unpleasant odors in the fridge can come from forgotten food that goes bad. To prevent your new refrigerator from starting to smell bad, regular cleaning is essential. Using natural products like baking soda, vinegar, and lemon is a great strategy. These ingredients, in addition to being effective for cleaning, effectively deodorize and can replace specific refrigerator cleaning products.

Cleaning and Deodorizing the Refrigerator

To clean and deodorize your refrigerator, vinegar is a great option. Its disinfectant and anti-odour properties are well known.

  • Using Vinegar to Neutralize Odors

  • Vinegar, an ally against bad odors: Placing a glass of vinegar inside the refrigerator is a simple and effective method to neutralize bad odors. Vinegar acts as a natural absorbent that captures and removes unpleasant odors. For a more thorough clean, vinegar can also be used in a spray bottle. Spray it directly onto the shelves and wipe down for a disinfectant and deodorizing clean.

  • Lemon for a Fresh Scent

  • Lemon, a natural deodorant: Lemon is known for its refreshing and purifying properties. Cut a lemon into slices and place them in different parts of the fridge. These slices act as natural air fresheners, diffusing a fresh and pleasant scent. It is recommended to change lemon slices weekly to maintain their effectiveness.

  • Potatoes to Absorb Odors

  • Potatoes, a well-known odor absorber: Peel a potato and place it in your refrigerator. Potatoes have a surprising ability to absorb bad odors. To maintain its effectiveness, it is advisable to replace it every 2 to 3 days. This simple and cost-effective method is especially useful for stubborn odors.

  • Coffee for a bewitching aroma

  • Coffee, a delicate and effective scent: Placing a bowl of ground coffee (or even more coffee grounds) inside the fridge is a good trick for flavoring the fridge. Coffee not only neutralizes unwanted odors but also leaves a pleasant, unobtrusive smell. This method is perfect for those who enjoy the subtle scent of coffee.

    Refrigerator Care

For a thorough clean, unplug the refrigerator, remove all its contents, and leave it open for a while. Clean drawers and compartments with detergent, rinse, dry and put them back in place. Pay special attention to the joints to prevent mold and mildew and consider replacing them if they are deteriorated.

    Prevent Odour Formation

To prevent bad odours, store food in airtight containers, especially strong-smelling ones, whether raw or cooked. Regularly check the expiration date of packaged food and clean the shelves without having to remove everything, finding an efficient way to do this with the refrigerator running.
