In 2015, researchers at Iran`s Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences have conducted a study in which they divided 88 obese or overweight women into two separate groups. The trial took three months and during this period their daily intake of calories was decreased by 500 and they also received nutrition counseling. The first group was given a teaspoon of cumin on a daily basis along with 5 ounces of yogurt. The second group received the same amount of yogurt but without the cumin.

Once the trial ended, the women from the cumin group had lost about three more pounds in comparison to the non-cumin group, totaling up to a total weight loss of thirteen pounds. In addition to this, the cumin group noted a decrease in their body fat percentage for up to 15 percent, which is three times the 5 percent loss produced by the non-cumin group.

Important Benefits Gained from Cumin Research

The internal benefits are more important than the results of this study. The levels of harmful blood fats, such as triglycerides, have dropped by 20 points in the non-cumin and by only 5 points in the non-cumin group. In addition to this, the women from cumin group have reduced over half of their points on cholesterol readings too. As mentioned in the very beginning, in addition to burning calories by ingesting cumin or including it into their daily diet, these women managed to significantly reduce their risk of obesity and heart disease as well. Last but not least, the researchers suggest that cumin has the ability to boost metabolism, due to the presence of phytosterols, compounds which inhibit the absorption of cholesterol.

In addition to the aforementioned benefits, there are many other advantages of using this spice on a regular basis. Some of them are as follows:

Due to the fact that it acts as expectorant, cumin looses up the phlegm and mucus accumulated in the respiratory tracts.

It is an excellent source of vitamin C which protects the body against infections and toxins and it boosts the immune system.

It lowers the risk of hypoglycemia, high concentration of glucose in the blood.

Cumin relieves gas troubles and stomach aches, which in turn improves digestion.

Last but not least, cumin has the ability to put an end to sleepless nights due to the fact that it acts as relaxant.

Cumin Tea Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 250 ml water
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

Instructions:

First, put the cumin seeds into a vessel and heat them on a low flame for about ten seconds. Add the water and allow it to boil. Cover the vessel and allow it to settle for five minutes. Finally, strain the liquid and drink it warm!

Additional Tip: Add a pinch of salt or few teaspoons of honey to taste.

To sum up, using cumin is one of the best ways to accelerate your weight loss process. It is definitely worth giving it a try because not only it helps you lose weight but it also reduces the risk of obesity, heart disease, and it improves your health in various aspects.
