Looking after your dental health

Gudrun Howell · October 31, 2019 ·

Dental health refers to your teeth and gums. You need always to ensure that you are safe from gum disease and cavities. Dentists around the world recommend different ways for you to ensure optimal mouth health. In this article, we look at the top tips that will guarantee a healthy mouth.

1. Water is key

Drinking water after every meal flushes out the enzymes left over after meals. Foods that are rich in sugar or contain high acidity, such as citrus foods, can have detrimental effects on your overall mouth health. Rinsing your mouth helps reduce the corrosiveness of these substances on your teeth.

2. Brush your teeth often

Brushing your teeth is also a sure way of ensuring your mouth’s health. Ensure that you use fluoride-rich toothpaste. Fluoride coats your teeth with a protective layer against plaque. It also has teeth whitening properties that help you have a brighter smile. You should always brush your tongue. It is also a site for plaque build-up and can lead to bad breath if ignored. Proper brushing should last at least two minutes.

3. Use the appropriate toothbrush

The type of toothbrush you also use matters. If you suffer from sensitive gums, opt for toothbrushes that have soft bristles. These are gentler on your gums and can easily penetrate the gaps within your teeth, ensuring a thorough clean. Always change your toothbrush regularly or once you notice the bristles have begun fraying.

4. Visit your dentist regularly

Regular dentist visits are vital in ensuring proper dental health. The dentist not only assesses your mouth but can also spot any irregularities and treat them earlier. Your dentist visits can also include regular cleaning. Teeth whitening and other procedures help reduce the build-up of tartar.

5. Quit Smoking

Tar is one of the leading causes of stained teeth among tobacco users. Continuous use of tobacco can lead to tar deposits that lead to teeth discoloration. Smoking also contributes to a weaker immune system, which makes you more susceptible to infections and sicknesses such as gingivitis.

6. Avoid holding food and drinks in your mouth

The digestion process starts in the mouth where saliva acts on the foods that we consume. A by-product of this is that the food that is being digested starts releasing acidic substances that can be detrimental to the integrity of our teeth’s enamel.

7. Floss regularly

Dental floss helps in removing any leftover food pieces or deposits that were not cleaned during a regular brush. IT is thin enough to get through the spaces and ensures a thorough clean. Just as with toothpaste, always use floss that is rich in fluoride. Mouthwash can also work as an alternative to flossing, especially for small children. Consult with your dentist on what mouthwash best suits your specific needs.

The above are general tips on maintaining proper dental health. Different individuals have different requirements. Always consult your dentist Harrow for a more personalized regimen for your dental health.
