If you're on any of these medications, DO NOT use apple cider vinegar | Healthy Life Vision

Gudrun Howell · July 11, 2018 ·

The health benefits of apple cider vinegar are well-known and this ingredient is deeply rooted in alternative medicine. As a matter of fact, people have been long used ACV to treat various health issues, from fungus to obesity.  However, even though it possesses many health benefits, apple cider vinegar may cause some adverse side effects. Given the fact that it has strong compounds, it may cause negative effects if it comes into contact with certain medications. So, if you are suffering from any of the conditions listed below, don’t use apple cider vinegar.

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar provides many health benefits, meaning that there are many reasons why you should include it in your daily diet.  It has been found that it helps the stomach empty slowly, which in turn makes people feel full for an extended period of time and thus lose weight. According to one Chinese study, regular consumption of apple cider vinegar reduced the risk of developing esophageal cancer by 37%.  Due to its antifungal and antibacterial properties, oral or topical use of apple cider vinegar inhibits the growth of yeast infection and athlete`s food.  Last but not least, it has been scientifically shown that the acetic acid found in ACV lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels and it even reduced the risk of developing cancer.  Even though it doesn’t work the same for all diabetics, many people suffering from diabetes claim that ACV has anti-glycemic effect which prevents blood sugar spikes.

Medicines That React Badly to Apple Cider Vinegar

As mentioned above, even though it provides many health benefits, apple cider vinegar may cause certain side effects due to its interaction with certain medications. Most medications which interact with ACV lead to lower potassium levels in the body.

1.     Digoxin  This medication is also sold under the name Lanoxin and it is used to treat heart issues. Apple cider vinegar inhibits body`s ability to absorb potassium, whose deficiency increases the severity and incidence of side effects caused by this medication. The most common side effects include mood swings, vision changes, vomiting, dizziness, and diarrhea.

2.     Diuretics Diuretics, such as Microzide, Lasix, Thalitone, and Diuril, are used to treat bloating as they stimulate the body to flush out excess liquid from the body.  Given the fact that potassium is critical for keeping water balance in the body, if apple cider vinegar lowers potassium levels the person may end up dehydrated.

3.     Insulin  It is a well-known fact that insulin helps diabetics keep their blood sugar levels in check and control their condition. Even though it has been scientifically shown that apple cider vinegar may help diabetics regulate their blood sugar, those who are already on insulin should avoid ACV. Taking both of them at the same time leads to low blood sugar and potassium levels in the body.
