Can you stay without a dental crown for a long time?

Gudrun Howell · June 19, 2024 ·

What to do if a crown comes off?

In the event that a dental crown comes off, it can be recovered and temporarily put back in place using toothpaste or a specific adhesive paste. Without its crown, the tooth is vulnerable, exposed to food debris build-ups and bacteria, requiring meticulous cleaning of the affected area to avoid complications.

How long can a tooth go without a crown?

Although a tooth can technically go several weeks without a crown, it is strongly advised not to leave a tooth bare for a long time. Prolonged exposure can increase tooth sensitivity to extreme temperatures and risk further damage. It is therefore crucial to consult your dentist quickly to find a lasting solution.

Are there alternatives to crowns?

For those looking for options other than crowns, dental veneers represent a viable alternative, although primarily for anterior teeth. Veneers, often made of porcelain, are thin coatings that attach to the front of teeth, improving aesthetics while providing some protection. It is important to note that veneers are best suited for teeth that do not undergo the major stresses of chewing, unlike molars.

When does the loss of a dental crown require emergency care?

While the loss of a dental crown is not generally considered an emergency, there are certain circumstances that require immediate attention. If a crown falls out suddenly, exposing the underlying tooth, it can lead to significant pain or additional damage, making emergency care necessary.

  • Significant pain: Whether it occurs with or without signs of trauma, prompt intervention is crucial to prevent complications.
  • Partially attached crown: This can pose a choking hazard and should be addressed without delay.
  • Inability to remove or replace the crown: If you are unable to completely remove or replace the crown, see a dentist immediately.
  • How do you put a dental crown back?

If you find yourself in a situation where your dental crown has come loose, it is possible to put it back in place temporarily while waiting to see your dentist. Here’s how to do it safely:

  • Cleaning the crown: Start by cleaning the inside of the crown. Use toothpaste to remove residue and sanitize the surface.
  • Crown Attachment: Apply a specific dental adhesive to attach the crown to your tooth. Alternatively, you can use toothpaste or chewing gum if you don’t have adhesive on hand, although these solutions are less durable.
  • It is crucial to understand that these methods are only temporary. A poorly fixed crown can, in the long term, expose the tooth to the risk of deep decay, affecting the pulp and potentially requiring root canal treatment.

    Alternatives to dental crowns

If the use of a dental crown does not seem appropriate to you, it is essential to know the other solutions available. It is always best to consult your dentist to choose the solution best suited to your situation. Here are some of the alternatives you might want to consider:

  • Tooth extraction: This is often the least expensive option, but it can lead to complications, such as shifting neighboring teeth, affecting your ability to chew properly.
  • Dental Onlays : These pieces are designed to restore a specific part of the tooth and are a less invasive option than full crowns.
  • Indirect resin crowns: An intermediate solution that can be adapted to several situations without requiring dental preparation as extensive as that required for traditional crowns.
  • Progressive therapy: This less drastic approach allows dental problems to be treated in stages and can sometimes avoid the use of crowns.
  • Temporary crowns: Used as a temporary solution, they can protect the tooth while waiting for a more permanent solutionnte.
  • Although extraction may seem economical initially, it is generally not recommended except as a last resort due to the risk of later complications. Crowns, although more expensive, offer preservation of the natural tooth structure and can prevent heavier and more expensive procedures in the future. Talk to your dentist about the best options to maintain your dental health without compromising the functionality or aesthetics of your smile.

Can you eat with a missing dental crown?

If you find yourself without a dental crown, it is still possible to eat, but some precautions are necessary. It is advisable to chew on the other side of the mouth to avoid putting pressure on the exposed tooth.

Be careful about the type of food that you consume. Avoid sticky foods that can adhere to the tooth and complicate cleaning, increasing the risk of cavities. It’s also a good idea to avoid hard foods that could further damage the vulnerable tooth.

Keep these tips in mind to keep your comfort and protect your tooth until the crown can be replaced or repaired.
