Gudrun Howell · September 15, 2023 ·

Grandfather’s Day in France: the celebration of a precious bond

If Grandmother’s Day has been celebrated in France since 1987, French grandfathers were only late from the 5 October 2008. Since then, grandchildren have had the chance to pay tribute to their grandfathers and show them their affection in various ways, ranging from simple warm thoughts to carefully chosen gifts, to joyful moments shared around a table… This celebration was designed to forge strong links between generations, creating a precious moment, rich in emotions and memories.

Grandfather’s Day: history and origins

The history of Grandfather’s Day has its roots in the visionary spirit of Franck Izquierdo, a French author renowned for his children’s books, who, to pay tribute to his own deceased grandfather, submitted a request to the INPI (National Institute of Intellectual Property) to grant grandfathers a valuation in the same way as mothers, fathers and grandmothers, and to create an authentic and emotional celebration in their honor… And unlike Grandmother’s Day, which was introduced by the coffee brand “Café grandma”, that of grandfathers emerged from a desire to strengthen human and family ties. Thus was born a tradition of respect and love specially designed for our grandparents…

Grandpa’s Day on an international scale

Grandfather’s Day is not limited to the French borders… In fact, it goes far beyond that! Moreover, several countries have instituted special days for it to be celebrated!

  • In Poland, Grandfather’s Day is celebrated on January 22.
  • In Italy, Grandfather’s Day is held annually October 2.

However, in some countries, Elders’ Day is celebrated together, including grandmothers and grandfathers. Here are the countries concerned as well as the date of celebration:

  • In the United States and Canada, Grandparents’ Day, including grandfathers’ day, was introduced respectively since 1978 and 1995 and it falls every Sunday after Labour Day, which takes place on the first Monday in September.
  • In Portugal, it is “El dia dos avos” according to the tradition of the Catholic Church and it is celebrated on July 26 of the Gregorian calendar.
  • In Taiwan, grandfathers are honored Since 2010 every last Sunday of August.

Grandfather’s Day: why?

In an era where life expectancy is increasing thanks to major advances, our seniors are living longer and healthier lives; No more wars, diseases and epidemics. However, if once grandparents lived under the same roof with their children and grandchildrenToday, social developments have meant that the elderly are somehow sidelined… But whether they live in a retirement home, are placed in a specialized nursing home, or their children and grandchildren live hundreds of miles away, this holiday is an affectionate reminder to care for our elders and an opportunity to inspire our children to connect with their grandfathers and express their sincere love.

What gift to offer on the occasion of Grandfather’s Day?

Just like for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day or Grandmother’s Day, it’s not the price of the packaging that counts, but the precious thought that you slip inside… Anyway, sending a greeting card to your grandfather or giving him a gift can only touch him sincerely!

Poems to wish his grandfather a happy birthday

Poem 1:

My dear grandfather, shooting star of my life,

Your love sparkles, doux and infinity.

On this special day, I celebrate with joy,

Your stories and your laughter that charm me every time.

Like the passing years, you are our solid pillar,

Always there to guide me, advise me and illuminate my “wrinkle”.

The memories you have left me through time,

Remind me that these moments by your side are a precious gift.

Thanks to your warm embraces and angelic love,

My childhood was magical,

Happy feast, grandfather with such a tender heart,

The moments shared, the lessons taught, I still have a lot to learn.

Poem 2:

Grandpa, your presence is a special gift,

Your love is our family treasure,

Your wisdom is an inexhaustible source,

In my heart, you are irreplaceable.

On the occasion of this special holiday,

I write these words to you pretending to be Molière,

At your side, I lived precious moments,

Thanks to your benevolent and always radiant smile,

Looking into your eyes, I see a lifetime go by,

Your joyful laughter still echoes in my head like a melody,

Happy feast to you, my sweet landmark,

My love for you is so strong that nothing can undo it.
