Why should you put bay leaves in your cupboard?

Gudrun Howell · December 24, 2023 ·

Properties and Benefits of Bay Leaves

Laurel, an aromatic plant universally appreciated and widespread in Mediterranean regions, far exceeds its usefulness in cooking. The essential oil extracted from its leaves and berries is a treasure trove with many properties. Among the recognized benefits of laurel are its digestive and carminative action, its expectorant power, its astringent and anti-inflammatory effect, as well as its repellent action against parasites and insects.

Bay Leaves in the Closet: A Ritual With Many Virtues

Among the many uses of the laurel, putting its leaves in the cupboard is particularly remarkable. Here’s what they’re used for:

  • Laurel for Perfume: Dried bay leaves, sprinkled in the corners of the closet or in the pockets of clothes, give off a fresh and pleasant scent. It is recommended to renew the leaves every two weeks.
  • Laurel to Wick Away Moisture: In winter, these leaves absorb moisture. Placed with baking soda in small bowls inside the cabinet, they prevent mold and mildew from growing while scenting the space.
  • Laurel Scented Bags: Make scented bags using bay leaves to intensify the pleasant aroma in the cabinet and drawers.
  • Laurel Against Moths: In addition to its intoxicating scent, bay leaf acts as a natural moth repellent, discouraging moths from settling in your closet.
  • How to make a Natural Laurel Cleaner for the Cabinet?

  • Concoct a natural cleanser by infusing 5 bay leaves in 500 ml of water,
  • Add baking soda and Marseille soap.
  • This solution, once cooled, becomes excellent for cleaning, disinfecting and scenting your cabinet and drawers.

By incorporating these simple tips into your routine, you will discover the unexpected benefits of bay leaves, making this plant a valuable ally in your home and garden.
