Elongated cat

Catnip could be a real remedy for these felines. Indeed, it can make them playful or joyful, or calm them for perfect relaxation. What is catnip? What is the effect of this plant on this animal? And how to give it to him? Explanations.

Why do cats love catnip?

It is no longer a secret that cats love this herb. What is the reason for this craze? Before answering this question, it would be wiser to project a little more on this plant and know some of its properties.

  • What is catnip?

Nepeta cataria or catnip, is a plant of the same family as that of mint. You can also find it under the name catmint. Native to Europe, Africa and Asia, this plant contains “nepetalactone”, a molecule that attracts cats. The leaves, stems and flowers of catnip release an aromatic oil. However, not all cats are receptive to the nepetalactone molecule.

Although not all cats are affected by this plant, 50-70% are sensitive to it. Indeed, experts claim that nepetalactone, affects cats like a pheromone, through receptors in their nose. As for the effect aroused, it differs from one cat to another. Some become excited and playful while others become calm and relaxed thanks to the action of this plant. According to genetics, not all cats are receptive to this plant. Catnip can be purchased in several forms: tube, spray or oil. You can even grow it in your garden. By diluting catnip in water, you can refresh your pet’s toys. You can also sprinkle dried catnip on your feline’s bed or scratching posts.

Indeed, valerian can become a real drug for your cat. Its smell reminds cats of pheromones, which are produced by the opposite sex.
