What Is the Right Position to Sleep for Each of These Health Problems? | Healthy Life Vision

Gudrun Howell · July 26, 2018 ·

Sleeping plays a big part in our overall health – many health problems are indeed caused by the lack of sleep and rest. The average person sleeps 7-9 hours overnight, which accounts for more than 25 years spent sleeping and clearly shows how important it is. However, according to new studies, it’s not just the sleeping that’s important – the position we sleep in is important as well.

Sleeping positions affect our health in many ways – they have an impact on our blood pressure and may resolve problems such as sinus infections and back pain. Here are 9 sleeping positions that can relieve various problems and pains:

  1. Neck pain

To relieve neck pain and get some sleep overnight, all you need to do is to put a rolled-up towel under the neck.

  1. Back pain

According to WebMD, back pain can be relieved by putting a rolled towel under the curve of your back and a pillow under your knees.

  1. Shoulder pain

Women’s Health Magazine suggests avoiding sleeping on the painful side and sleeping with bent legs as well. To make yourself more comfortable, you can grasp a pillow to your chest and put another between the knees.

  1. PMS pain

If you’re suffering from PMS-related pain and symptoms, you should sleep on your back with a pillow under the knees. This will prevent spinal pain and help you get some relief.

  1. Headache

Sleeping positions can relieve or worsen a headache. Experts believe that headaches occur due to a twisted neck during sleeping, so in order to prevent them, you should sleep by surrounding your head with pillows like on the picture.

  1. High blood pressure

According to a study published on WebMD, sleeping on the stomach with your face down can reduce your blood pressure significantly. We, however, suggest speaking with a doctor first to inform yourself on the general state of your blood pressure.

  1. Sinus problems

In cases of sinus infections, you should sleep with a slightly elevated head in order to prevent the mucus from leaking into the sinuses and causing further problems.

  1. Digestive problems

To boost your digestion and resolve any kind of digestive problem, you should sleep on the left side. This makes gravity improve the digestive process and will allow you to sleep better.

  1. Heartburn

To relieve heartburn, you should sleep on the left side.

As you can see, some sleeping positions can indeed improve your overall health. Try one of them for the health problems listed above and tell us if they worked. We’d love to hear from you!
