Sugar, among with carbs and fat, is one of the main factors for weight gain. It’s almost impossible to avoid the substance as it’s present in almost any of the foods we eat on a daily basis. Soda, salad dressings, yogurt, candy, sweets and even some fruits contain a high amount of sugar which might be responsible for your weight gain.

The main symptoms of sugar overload are thirst, mental disorientation, sleepiness, depression, headaches, fatigue, hyperactivity and yeast infections. Consuming high amounts of sugar on a daily basis can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

The link between sugar and weight gain

Consuming too much sugar will result in the body storing the excess into fat. The body processes artificial and natural sugars in a different manner. Once it enters the intestine, the body recognizes artificial sugar as bacteria and raises the blood sugar levels, which later accumulates in the so-called critical zones (waist, hips and belly).

Sugar is a highly addictive substance and has been compared to heroin in terms of addiction. Excluding it from your diet is easier said than done; this may lead to sugar withdrawal symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, cravings, etc. If you try to satiate your cravings with a cookie, the symptoms won’t stop, so you need to break the cycle by excluding sugar products from your diet one by one. Additionally, here’s a powerful sugar detox diet which will help you get rid of the harmful substance and improve your overall health.

Day 1

Breakfast: 3 eggs (scrambled or boiled), a cup of oats with some almonds and berries

Snack: a bowl of nuts

Lunch: chicken breasts (roasted) with turnips, beans, almonds, carrots and beets

Dinner: broiled fish, a bowl of green beans and salmon, mushrooms and broccoli

Day 3

Breakfast: steel-cut oats with some almonds and berries and 3 scrambled eggs with spinach

Snack: a bowl of nuts

Lunch: grilled zucchinis with a bit of lemon, vinegar, thyme and yellow peppers dressing; a bowl of shredded green and red cabbage with some olive oil, lemon juice, salt and parsley

Dinner: steamed vegetables, bean soup, vegetable casserole, stir-fried Bok Choy and roasted turnips and Brussels sprouts

During the diet, you can drink unsweetened tea, coffee and the following detox water:

Ingredients

Blueberries

Strawberries

Oranges

Grapefruit

Rosemary

Mint

Preparation

Chop the fruits and herbs and put them in a jar, then pour filtered water in it and leave the mixture in the fridge for a few hours. Drink the detox water throughout the day.

During the diet, you need to avoid honey, agave syrup, maple syrup and artificial sweeteners. The sugar cravings can be a challenge, so be prepared for them. Prepare your foods with olive oil, and replace the bread in your diet with whole grain bread which will regulate your blood sugar levels. You can also eat a vegetable salad of your own choice every day with a healthy dressing. To reduce the sugar cravings, you may have ½ a cup of beans, lentils and chickpeas. Finally, make sure to drink plenty of water as well.

After completing the diet, you should follow it with a healthy diet plan recommended by a doctor or nutritionist in order to keep your blood sugar levels stabilized.
