How to properly clean your ears?

Gudrun Howell · July 2, 2024 ·

The important role of earwax

Earwax, that waxy substance that everyone dreads, actually plays a super important role. Did you know that it prevents small impurities from entering your external ear canal? Yes! In addition, it pushes these impurities outwards, thus eliminating them naturally. It’s a bit like an invisible guardian.

The dangers of cotton swabs

Who hasn’t used a cotton swab to clean their ears? Still, it’s one of the worst things you can do. This is because cotton swabs tend to push earwax deeper into the ear canal, creating earwax plugs. Worse still, they can cause eardrum injuries. A friend of mine, Marc, ended up with an ear infection because he used cotton swabs too often. Needless to say, he learned his lesson the hard way!

Safe methods to clean your ears

So, how do you clean your ears properly and safely? Here are some tips:

  • Soft, damp cloth : Simply use a soft, damp cloth to clean the outside of your ear. This avoids any risk of damage to the ear canal.
  • Ear Picks : This traditional tool, used in China and Japan, allows earwax to be removed without pushing it further into the canal.
  • Cleaning sprays : If you have a significant buildup of earwax, a spray like Audispray Cleanser can help flush out earwax.

Mistakes to avoid

There are methods that should be avoided at all costs, as they can be dangerous:

  • Ear candles : In addition to the risk of burns, they can cause burns to the external ear canal and even perforate the eardrum.
  • Sharp objects : It sounds obvious, but it’s crucial to never insert sharp objects into your ears. The risks of cuts and perforation of the eardrum are real.

My cleansing ritual

Personally, I have adopted a simple but effective cleansing routine. Once a week, I take a hot shower and then use a damp tissue to gently clean the outside of my ears. This method softens the earwax, making cleaning easier and less risky.

Cleaning your ears may seem trivial, but it is crucial to do it correctly to avoid health problems. Take care of your ears, they are precious! Thank you for taking the time to read. And don’t forget: the next time your ears are stuffy, think about these tips before you break out the cotton swabs!

A fun little fact to finish: Did you know that ears continue to produce earwax throughout our lives, and that this production can increase when stressed? Fascinating, isn’t it? Thank you again and see you soon!
