Gudrun Howell · February 16, 2017 ·

Did you know that basil is one of the most potent natural antibiotics and that it is known as the King of the Herbs? It is one of the oldest and most appreciated herbal plants, mostly due to the beneficial phytonutrients it contains.

This super healthy plant is considered “holy herb” in many cultures. It is an annual herb whose leaves and seeds are used for medicinal purposes. Warm and tropical climates are most productive for this plant and according to the experts there are over 60 varieties of it. They are divided into three major categories: sweet, purple, and bush.

Note: Basil can be also grown indoors and this process is very simple. Once you notice that there is tiny branch underneath the base of leaf near the bottom, simply remove the head to keep the plant full. After a while a new branch will emerge.

It also important to mention that the best would be to consume basil fresh, which promises a pungent and sweet flavor with earthy and pleasant aroma. It is also abundant in nutrients, including vitamin K which prevents blood clotting.  The list of other important nutrients includes potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, calcium, vitamin C as well as antibacterial properties and DNA-protecting flavonoids. Basil also supplies you with beta-carotenes, potent antioxidants which prevent damage caused by free radicals and protect your cells from various body structures.  Some of the major health benefits of basil include ability to prevent heart attack, stroke, high cholesterol, and atherosclerosis.
