DIY: How to Make an Easy Homemade Hot Water Bottle

Gudrun Howell · October 8, 2023 ·

Hot water bottles are ideal allies to warm up and relax in cold weather. Rather than buying a ready-made hot water bottle, why not create your own personalised homemade hot water bottle? In this article, we’ll show you how to make a homemade hot water bottle in a few simple steps.

Step 1: Gather the materials

To make your own hot water bottle, you’ll need the following:

  • A durable cotton fabric (approx. 25 cm x 25 cm)
  • Thread and a needle or sewing machine
  • Uncooked rice or dried cherry pits
  • Aromatic herbs (optional)
  • A wooden spoon
  • A funnel

Step 2: Prepare the filling

If you’d like an aromatic hot water bottle, mix the rice or cherry pits with dried herbs like lavender or chamomile in a bowl. Herbs add a fragrant touch to your hot water bottle. Make sure the mixture is not too dry.

Step 3: Make the cover

Fold your fabric in half with the right side facing inwards to form a 12.5 cm x 12.5 cm square. Sew three of the sides, leaving one side open to fill the hot water bottle.

Step 4: Fill the hot water bottle

Use a funnel to pour the rice or cherry pit mixture into the hot water bottle through the opening. Make sure the hot water bottle is not overfilled, leave some room for the contents to move.

Step 5: Close the hot water bottle

Sew the remaining opening by hand or with a sewing machine to seal the hot water bottle. Make sure the seams are strong to prevent leakage.

Step 6: Use your hot water bottle

To use your hot water bottle, place it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, depending on the power of your appliance. You can also heat it in the oven at 150°C for about 10 minutes. Make sure the hot water bottle is not too hot before applying it to your body.

In conclusion, making your own homemade hot water bottle is a fun and useful activity for the colder months. With a few simple steps and easy-to-find materials, you can create a custom hot water bottle that will keep you warm on chilly nights. Don’t hesitate to personalise your hot water bottle by choosing the fabric and aromatic herbs you like the most. Now you’re ready to relax and warm up with your homemade DIY hot water bottle!
