How to choose between an eau de parfum and an eau de toilette?

Gudrun Howell · May 16, 2023 ·

Summary

What is the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette? What is the difference between an eau de parfum, an eau de toilette and the eau de cologne? What is the perfume that lasts the longest? When to use eau de toilette for men or women? How to create your own eau de toilette, eau de parfum or eau de cologne at home?

The perfume is evocative of memories and emotions. This is one of the most personal beauty products representing a sea of options, raw materials and base notes… However, it is necessary to understand the difference between the two categories of the perfume world: eau de parfum and eau de toilette.

What is the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette?

Various fragrances: The concentration of perfume – the subtlety of using eau de toilette

It turns out that the main difference between the two fragrances is extremely simple and the answer is rather scientific.

“An eau de parfum has a higher concentration of perfume oil than an eau de toilette,” says Laura Slatkin, founder of NEST New York. “In the world of perfumes, the order from highest to lowest concentration is pure perfume, which tends to be solid: eau de parfum, eau de toilette and eau de cologne.”

Did you know that, as a general rule, an eau de parfum is composed of certain raw materials including 20% perfume oil, while an eau de toilette consists of only 10% to 15% of this oil?

Yes, but you should know that these compositions vary from one brand to another… However, eau de toilette is necessarily fresher and lighter unlike eau de parfum which is denser and more intense, as explained by Eduardo Valadez, marketing director of the French perfumery Diptyque.

The different types of perfumes

What is the difference between an eau de parfum, an eau de toilette and the eau de cologne?

What is the perfume that lasts the longest?

It is difficult to compare certain types of perfume to certain eau de toilette… The fruity and fresh base notes of light fragrant water will tend to evaporate faster, even at high concentrations… We test the perfume on our skin before buying it… It’s better!

The way raw materials react varies depending on the type of skin. The drier our skin, the more we will need to wear a higher concentration of perfume to have a real impact. Good luck!

When to use eau de toilette for men or women?

For a day at the office or when wearing your outfit of the day, eau de toilette seems more appropriate and comfortable, while eau de parfum is more pleasant worn in the evening thanks to its intense and deep smell.

We do not forget to take into account the temperature and the season in which we find ourselves before choosing one over the other. In humid and hot climates, opting for a fresh eau de toilette is preferable. In rainy and cold times, we choose a more intense fragrance to offer us warmth and depth.

How to create your own eau de toilette, eau de parfum or eau de cologne at home?

With essential oils:

Bottles of essential oils

Need a personalized perfume, made at home? We have found for you recipes to prepare at home…

The following ingredients will be required:

  • 2 tablespoons carrier oil (grape seed, jojoba, sweet almond or whichever you prefer)
  • 6 tablespoons vodka
  • 2.5 tablespoons bottled water
  • 30 drops of essential oil (9 for your top notes, 15 for your middle notes and 6 for your base notes)
  • A small funnel
  • A coffee filter
  • 2 clean dark glass bottles with airtight lids

How to use it

  • The selected carrier oil is poured into one of thes glass bottles. Then, we add the base, then the middle notes, and finally the top notes.
  • Alcohol is added.
  • Close the lid and let the perfume stand for 48 hours. (Keep in mind that when making a perfume with essential oils, the longer you let it sit, the more intense the fragrance will be, so you can leave it for up to 6 weeks if you wish.)
  • Once satisfied with the result, add the water and shake the vigorously for 1 minute.
  • The filter and funnel are used to transfer the fragrance to the second container.
  • Your perfume is now ready… It will be unique!

    With flowers:

    What you need:

    • 1/2 cup chopped flowers (roses for example)
    • 1 Medium size bowl with lid
    • 2 cups distilled water
    • Cheesecloth
    • A small saucepan
    • A small glass bottle with an airtight cap, washed and sterilized

    Preparation:

  • We start by washing the flower petals, removing all the dirt.
  • The flowers are soaked overnight in the cheesecloth-lined bowl and covered.
  • Press the flower bag over a saucepan, extract the flower-scented water and simmer over low heat until about a teaspoon of liquid remains.
  • Finally, cold water is poured into this liquid and bottled. Then, we let it rest overnight! And here is your sweet perfume is ready!
  • You are now ready to distinguish a perfume from an eau de toilettes… Having trouble choosing one? Opt for these recipes and you will find the perfume that really suits you… In any case, you will leave a beautiful mark on your path…
