Gudrun Howell · April 26, 2023 ·

Menstrual panties have become very popular in recent years due to their comfort and durability. Indeed, menstrual panties are put on like conventional panties and their use reduces waste related to disposable sanitary protection.

However, it is important to know how to properly wash and care for your menstrual panties to ensure their durability and effectiveness. Here are some practical tips for washing and maintaining your menstrual panties.

What are menstrual panties?

Menstrual panties are an eco-friendly and comfortable alternative to traditional sanitary protections such as tampons and sanitary napkins. Made from fabrics specially designed to absorb menstrual flow, period panties can be worn all day without the risk of leakage.

Menstrual panties are available in a variety of sizes and styles to meet every woman’s needs. Weekiss menstrual panties are available, for example, in many models: boxers, thongs, tanga, panties. Opting for menstrual panties makes it possible to be part of a more environmentally friendly approach. Indeed, after use, period panties can be washed and thus used several times.

Composition of menstrual panties

The composition of menstrual panties can vary depending on the manufacturer, most of the time it is composed of three layers:

  • An absorbent layer that is often made of technical fabrics such as bamboo, organic cotton, polyester or nylon. These fabrics are specially designed to absorb menstrual flow and prevent leakage.
  • The upper part of panties is often made of soft, stretchy fabrics for optimal fit and freedom of movement.
  • Panties may also have a waterproof layer to prevent leakage.

The Weekiss brand uses Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified fabrics for the manufacture of its menstrual panties. This label certifies that the panties are free of all toxic substances. In addition to being an excellent ecological alternative to disposable sanitary protection, menstrual panties also protect against toxic shocks. Indeed, for some time some feminine hygiene products have been questioned for the presence of endocrine disruptors in their composition. Menstrual panties, on the other hand, are generally made with materials that respect the intimate flora.

How ruler panties work

Period panties are worn like classic lingerie. It can be used alone or in addition to other hygienic protection. Menstrual panties guarantee, in general, optimal protection for 8 to 12 hours, depending on the flow.

To ensure the proper functioning of menstrual panties, choose a model adapted to your flow. For example, menstrual thongs and tangas are recommended for light flows or for the beginning and end of cycles. On the other hand, shortys and boxers are more suitable for a medium to abundant flow. After use, menstrual panties can be washed by hand or in the machine. Check out our tips below for maintaining and washing your menstrual panties.

How to wash menstrual panties?

Menstrual panties have a lifespan of 1 to 5 years. To maximize its lifespan, it is essential to ensure proper maintenance. Here are our recommendations for washing and caring for your menstrual panties.

1. Wash your menstrual panties before first use

Before using your menstrual panties for the first time, it is important to wash them. You can wash it by hand or in the machine in a delicate cycle.

Menstrual panties should also be washed off after each use.

2. Pre-process tasks

Before you machine wash your panties or wash them by hand, rinse your panties with cold water.

Before each wash, it will be a question of letting escape the menstrual flow retained in the panties. To do this, soak your panties for 30 minutes in cold water, taking care to wring them out.

3. Use cold water

When washing your menstrual panties, use cold water instead of hot water. Hot water can damage tissues and tends to set tasks.

4. Avoid fabric softeners and harsh chemicals

Avoid using fabric softeners and harsh chemicals when washing your menstrual panties. These products can clog the pores of the panties, reducing its effectiveness in absorbing menstrual flow. Instead, use mild, natural detergents for washing.

5. Air Dry

After washing your menstrual panties, air dry. Avoid using the dryer, as heat can damage tissues and shorten the life of your menstrual panties.

6. Do not iron

Never iron your menstrual panties, as heat can damage the tissues.

By following these tips to properly care for your menstrual panties, you can extend their lifespan. Properly washing and maintaining your menstrual panties also ensures its effectiveness in absorbing menstrual flow.
