Do you know the 10-second rule? A little-known trick to improve the internet connection

Gudrun Howell · March 10, 2023 ·

Who has never been frustrated by the slow loading of their Internet connection? This is a constraint that users often complain about. Of course, installing a Wi-Fi router at home helps improve the connection to browse the web faster. But how to use it wisely? Have you ever heard of the “10-second rule”? Learn how this method can help you boost your router’s connection.

The 10-second rule: what is it exactly?

Restart the wifi router

Most people access the internet through a local Wi-Fi router. Except that sometimes the signal is weak or the connection speed is too slow. A very annoying situation that upsets many users. Also to stimulate the process and especially to avoid a possible breakdown, the equipment is restarted. But are you sure you perform this action correctly?

Certainly, everyone knows that restarting the modem is highly recommended, from time to time, to try to solve various problems. This maintenance process even helps interrupt a potential malicious attack on the network. But, few people know how to properly handle their router. Indeed, in the majority of cases, as they are eager to find their connection, they tend to turn it off and on immediately afterwards. However, you should know that it is important to allow a period of time to pass when disconnecting the router, so that the restart can take place correctly. This is where the “10-second rule” comes in. Indeed, specialists recommend waiting 10 seconds before turning the router back on. What for?  Because this device is equipped with capacitors, a kind of batteries, which power the device for a certain time. It usually takes 10 seconds to turn off completely. Therefore, before restarting your router, first make sure that it is perfectly turned off. To make it simpler, count to ten and turn it back on quietly.

Whether you’re working from home, watching your favorite series on Netflix or surfing an entertaining app, it’s always very unpleasant to have an unstable and capricious connection. Even with high-performance fiber optics and cables, no one is immune to a shaky connection at some point. Especially if many of you use the Internet at home. To help you improve Wi-Fi quality, here are some options that can help you.

1. Move your router

Is the router in the closet or hidden behind a piece of furniture? This is not a good idea. Walls, cabinets, and even shelves can potentially dampen your Wi-Fi signal. Remember that a simple change in the location of the router can make a real difference in speed and wireless transmission. Of course, the ideal place will depend on the layout of your home, but above all try to ensure that the modem is not cluttered with furniture or hidden in an area where it will not be able to fulfill its mission properly. So avoid installing it under a closet or inside a drawer. The more central, the better: the location of your router is essential to get the best possible connection.

2. Use an Ethernet cable

A wired connection to your router is faster and more stable than Wi-Fi. Especially since it is not likely to be affected by other devices. Only drawback: it limits the location of your devices and is therefore less convenient. However, if you need a high-performance Internet connection, whether it’s to work on the computer, stream a movie or manipulate a game console, it’s definitely worth using the router’s Ethernet port to insert a cable.

All you have to do is plug in uOne end of the power cord in an electrical outlet and the other end in the power outlet tucked away on the back of the modem. To connect the Ethernet cable to your laptop, it’s just as simple: the cable terminals have a characteristic connector, which fits into the computer and the modem (the word “Ethernet” is marked in the space indicated).

Good to know: If the Ethernet cable isn’t working and you have another one handy, try plugging it in to see if it works. If it works properly, then it proves that the previous cable is defective. Finally, restart your wireless router and you will get a more optimal connection.
