Throw a soap in the toilet tank: the genius trick that saves you trouble

Gudrun Howell · September 17, 2022 ·

Bad toilet odors can be very annoying, especially when entertaining guests. Most of the time, we arm ourselves with chemical deodorants to camouflage our odors. However, these products are not always effective and can produce the opposite effect. Do not panic ! With this practical and economical trick, your toilet will smell good all day long.

What trick to adopt to get rid of bad smells in the toilet?

There is a trick that claims to be “zero waste” to eliminate bad smells in the toilets. It is both simple and easy to set up. By adopting it, it will make your visit to the toilet more pleasant on a daily basis.

  • Put soap in a sock for continuous scented toilets

Take an old sock in which you will place a bar of soap. Then cut it with scissors until you reach the product. Next, tie a knot joining the two cut ends to form a bag for the soap. It is possible to make a second knot with the rest of the fabric to form a ring. The goal is to be able to suspend it inside the flush tank using a support.

By doing so, your bowl will be both cleaned and scented after each visit to the toilet.

Other tricks to get rid of bad toilet odors

No need to invest in home fragrances or household products to eliminate bad odors in the toilet. These unusual tricks are effective in neutralizing toilet odors. Of course, these must be preceded by regular cleaning of the toilet bowl, floor and other surfaces in the room.

  • Place a roll of scented toilet paper

Essential oils give off pleasant smells inside the toilet. Certain scents in particular can refresh the room, such as lemon, rosemary, lavender, tea tree or eucalyptus. To diffuse the scent of your choice, simply pour the essential oil on the inner carton of the toilet paper. Every time you unroll it, the smell will spread throughout the room.

  • Prepare deodorizing tablets for the toilet

There is another natural alternative to air fresheners that you can make yourself at home. To do this, simply mix the following ingredients:

  • 6 teaspoons of lemon juice;
  • 1 teaspoon of white vinegar;
  • 2 teaspoons of essential oil;
  • 1 cup baking soda.

Then add 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide drop by drop. Then form small tablets and leave for a whole day. The pellets can be thrown away the next day, inside the bowl. Their action will not only diffuse a good smell but also unclog your drains.

  • Strike matches in the toilet

This third trick from grandma involves striking a match and throwing it in the toilet bowl. The sulfur that emerges from the match will remove bad odors and clean the air of unpleasant scents released by the toilet. Do not hesitate to keep a box of matches near the toilets.

In order to avoid the proliferation of unpleasant odors in the toilets, nothing better than 100% natural products such as baking soda, white vinegar or lemon. However, some simple gestures must be adopted on a daily basis. Thereby, the bathroom or toilet must be ventilated for example, by opening the window regularly or after each use. A VMC mechanical ventilation system can be installed in order to renew the air in the room and suck up the humidity. Don’t hesitate to place a few scented candles near the toilet or prepare a potpourri made from plants and dried flowers.

As you will have understood, these amazing tricks will allow you to absorb bad odors and perfume the toilets. Likewise, they can be useful in other rooms of the house, such as the kitchen.
