Baking soda, olive oil, dishwashing liquid

Baking soda, olive oil, dishwashing liquid and water

Aphids are the enemies of your garden! These insects suck and chew the stems and leaves of plants, and cause them several damages until they destroy them. In addition, they are huge spreaders of diseases! So fight them with this natural anti-aphid with bicarbonate!

How? It’s simple! Prepare your own solution at home!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda;
  • 2 cups warm water;
  • 2/3 cups olive oil;
  • 4 to 5 drops of dishwashing liquid.

Steps to follow:

  • Combine all ingredients and mix evenly;
  • Pour into a spray bottle;
  • Shake the plant before spraying so that beneficial insects such as ladybugs, flying insects and pollinators fall or fly away. The aphids will remain attached to the plant;
  • Spray directly on aphids.
  • This baking soda recipe will get rid of aphids, but also mites and whiteflies!

    Baking soda

    Baking soda alone is a good insect repellent against many insects, including ants, cockroaches, silverfish, slugs and snails. Sprinkle it in large quantities on the garden floor, in the alleys and around the affected plants. The best way to apply it evenly is to use a flour sieve.

    You can also sprinkle it directly on problematic insects to exterminate them. Pour it on those on the ground or even on plants, provided you are careful and treat only punctually and in small quantities.

    For leafy greens like cabbage and lettuce, which are frequently victims of worms and caterpillars, sprinkle a homemade mixture of baking soda and flour in equal parts to remove all larvae.

    Mustard oil and baking soda

    Here is another homemade recipe for you to make a natural anti-aphid with bicarbonate to take care of your plants.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tablespoon baking soda;
    • 1/3 cup mustard oil;

    Steps to follow:

  • Mix baking soda and mustard oil and store your mixture in a covered and labelled container;
  • To use it, mix two teaspoons of the mixture into four cups of water;
  • Pour your preparation into a spray bottle and spray every corner of the garden, the paths and around the plants! Never spray plants directly!
  • Baking soda, neem oil, castile soap

    Baking soda, neem oil, castile soap and water

    Neem oil combined with baking soda form a good combination against pests. To make natural bicarbonate aphid control, follow these guidelines:

    Ingredients:

    • About 4 liters of water;
    • 2 tablespoons neem oil;
    • 1 tablespoon Castile soap;
    • 2 teaspoons of baking soda.

    Steps to follow:

  • Mix your ingredients and fill your sprayer;
  • Spray your plants with the natural anti-aphid solution with bicarbonate; Avoid doing this when the day is sunny so as not to burn the leaves.
  • In addition to killing insects, baking soda leaves an alkaline residue on the surface of plants, which is absolutely not conducive to the proliferation of fungal spores.

    Baking soda and dormant oil

    Bicarbonate, dormant oil, dishwashing liquid and water

    This natural anti-aphid with baking soda is relatively gentle, but it can kill bees and pollinators! So avoid putting them on plants that host beneficial insects, especially flowering plants.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 teaspoon baking soda;
    • 1 teaspoon of dormant oil;
    • 1/2 teaspoon dishwashing liquid;
    • About 4 liters of water.

    Steps to follow:

  • Mix all the ingredients, shaking vigorously;
  • Let the mixture rest until there are no more soap bubbles;
  • Pour your preparation into a sprayer and spray it on insect pests with your natural bicarbonate anti-aphid
  • Spray a natural anti-aphid with bicarbonate on plants

    Warning

    • Repeated use of baking soda is not beneficial for plants and soil. Composed of sodium, it can even, in the long term, become toxic;
    • The oils and soap added in our recipes are only used to keep the baking soda in place so that it can act properly on insects;
    • Homemade insecticides based on baking soda should be used in dry, cloudy or overcast weather. In this way, the plants do not dehydrate and do not burn because of the sun.
    • Sodium bicarbonate is soluble in water. Avoid spraying it on plants in rainy weather. If so, it must be applied again!

    FAQ

    How does baking soda kill insects?

    Baking soda is a common product found in most kitchens! Indeed, it is a leavening agent useful for cooking, but its usefulness does not stop there! Baking soda has many uses in the garden, among them, the fight against insects and pests! When ingested by insects, baking soda releases carbon dioxide into their system and causes them to die. Sprinkled at the base of plants, it kills and deters slugs, cutworms, cockroaches, ants, aphids, etc.

    What are aphid repellent plants?

    To get rid of aphids, you can plant plants that repel them. Flowers such as marigolds, nasturtiums and sunflowers can therefore get rid of pests naturally. You can also plant herbs like catnip, lavender, turmeric, ginger and oregano and even vegetables like onion and garlic.

    How to make a garlic spray against aphids?

    Aphids hate the pungent smell of garlic! So why not use it to make an aphid repellent! Put 100 g of crushed garlic in about 4 liters of water and let it rest for 24 hours. Then, boil your preparation for 20 minutes to extract the active ingredients and aromas of garlic! Once cooled, pour your mixture into a sprayer! It’s ready to use!

    Does white vinegar kill aphids?

    Yes! Vinegar contains acetic acid which acts as a natural pesticide by burning aphids. To make your insecticide, mix 1/4 white vinegar in 3/4 water. Pour your solution into a sprayer and spray it on the parts of the plants affected by aphids. Repeat the process after a week to remove the remaining parasites.

    Do I need a special baking soda for gardening?

    No!  It’s actually the same baking soda you buy at the supermarket, grocery store, or DIY store. On the other hand, it is necessary to distinguish between the food bicarbonate used in cooking and the industrial baking soda used for household work and which is less pure; But both types of bicarbonate can be used in the garden.
